For half a century, Friends of Plumas Wilderness has been dedicated to preserving the natural ecosystems where the Sierra and Cascades meet. Since our founding in 1974, we have worked tirelessly to protect this cherished landscape through advocacy, conservation efforts, and community engagement. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we reflect on our achievements and reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding this special place for future generations.

50th Anniversary Celebration Event

Join us for a fun filled evening celebrating 50 years of Friends of Plumas Wilderness.

We’ll gather over a delicious meal to hear from Friends of Plumas Wilderness Board of Directors, founders and longtime supporters looking back at our enduring legacy and looking forward to the future ahead.

Join us Friday, September 27th at 5pm at the Meadow Valley Schoolhouse in Meadow Valley, California. This anniversary fundraising event will feature the musical stylings of The Kepple Band + Chris Rellatack, inspiring speakers, and a silent auction with an array of items like original artwork, unique experiences & more. Ticket includes one drink token, additional tokens available by donation.

Great Sierra River Cleanup

To kick off our week of 50th anniversary activities. we’re excited to participate in the 2024 Great Sierra River Cleanup!

This year, we’re partnering with Plumas National Forest – Mt Hough Ranger District and Plumas Corporation to cleanup along Spanish Creek near Oakland Camp, a well loved area in need of some attention. The largest single-day volunteer event in California, the Great Sierra River Cleanup is an offshoot of the California Coastal Commission’s Coastal Cleanup and brings together Californians to care for their watersheds.


Meet at 9am at the FoPW offices, 546 Lawrence Street on Saturday, September 21st. We’ll briefly discuss the plan for the day before carpooling to Oakland Camp

Cleanup supplies will be provided including gloves and trash bags. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes and a hat, bring along sunscreen, water/waterbottle (refills will be available) and snacks.

Bucks Lake Stewardship event for Public Lands Day

Join us as we close out our week of 50th anniversary activities for a choose-your-own-adventure stewardship event in the Bucks Lake Wilderness for Public Lands Day!

Meet at Silver Lake Campground at 9am, Saturday September 28th (Public Lands Day!)

Stewardship activities to choose from:
(1) Clearing trail of chaparral – Hike 2 miles round trip and cut chaparral on the trail to Gold Lake & Granite Gap. Pruning shears will be provided
(2) Resetting sign – Hike 3 miles round trip and reset the Rock Lake signpost. Rock bar and post hole digger will be provided
(3)  Bagging burned fencing – Hike 10 miles round trip to fens in the Mt. Pleasant Research Natural Area and bag fiberglass fencing that burned in the Dixie Fire. Trash bags and face masks will be provided. Bring a big backpack if you want to hike some trash out! What we don’t haul out will be packed out by horses at a later date.

Regardless of the stewardship adventure you choose, please remember to bring: close-toed shoes, appropriate clothing for the weather, sun glasses, sun screen, hat, gloves, water, lunch and snacks. Necessary tools will be provided.
